European Commission notifies new MRL for 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene

September 29, 2022

The European Commission has published new maximum residue levels (MRL) for 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene (Commission Regulation (EU) 2022/1346). Regulatory agencies did acknowledge that 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene could naturally occur in plant products and that setting MRLs for products of plant origin at the Limit of Determination (LOD) could be inappropriate. Therefore, the level for non-treated plants and food commodities was increased from 0.01 mg/kg to 0.05 mg/kg.

At the same time MRL were set for products of animal origin which could occur after feeding potatoes or parts thereof to animals.

No risk for consumers was concluded with this updated MRL. They were added to Annex II of Regulation (EC) 396/2005.

This update was a result of the review of existing MRL according to Article 12(1) of Regulation (EC) 396/2005. The MRL for potatoes remains unchanged at 15 mg/kg. These updates become applicable on 22 February 2023.
